Every year we (Browns fans) say this is the best roster the Browns have since returning in 1999. May this be the season to actually have proof? In 2022, we know the results and do not have to relive that here, but to sum up the point, Browns fans should feel better about this season than last season. Browns brass vowed to have a better training camp and preseason consisting of a team trip to The Greenbriar Resort in West Virginia. "It's a business trip, no girlfriends/significant others, distractions, fans. Something that really stood out during the Browns lone successful season under coach Kevin Stefanski in 2020 during peak Covid where fans were not allowed in the stands at capacity and teams were essentially grounded during the week from distractions. The Browns also for obvious reasons have attempted to fix needs that struggled in 2022 such as, special teams by hiring a new coordinator in Bubba Ventrone (former player) , defensively by hiring a new coordinator Jim Schwartz (former scout) and free agents at key positions of need.
The 53 man roster is yet to be determined as it is still training camp, but this will be a good tool to look back on to see how the season will actually play out as a "no excuses" season for the players and coaching staff. Browns were 2-6 last season in games decided by 1 score whether touchdown or field goal and led all of those games to start the 4th quarter. Before breaking down each position room to look forward to let's highlight some team goals for the upcoming 2023 season.
Finishing games - as mentioned earlier in the blog, Browns struggled to hold leads after leading to start the 4th quarter. Browns were also statistically one of the best teams on their first drive of every game. Every good to great team should be able to come back and win games. There are always a few games that can determine a whole season for any team in the NFL as so many games finish within 1 score. Browns were 2-6 in games decided by 1 score.
3rd down stops to get off the field defensively - Browns struggled game after game defensively under defensive coordinator Joe Woods whether it was 3rd and short or 3rd and long. Opposing offenses always seemed to get enough yards for a 1st down to extend drives forcing the Browns defense to stay on the field which eventually wore the defense down during games resulting in scores.
Turnovers - New Browns DC Jim Schwartz has made it an urgency to win turnover battles in 2023. The Browns are 23-6 in their last 29 regular season games when they win the turnover battle.
Not "un-special" Teams - Browns were among one of the worst rated Special Teams rosters in 2022 in penalties, FGs, extra points, and punts. Cleaning up even this position can determine a win or a loss as far as field position, a game coming down to a missed FG or extra point.
Division games - Browns HC Kevin Stefanski is 26-24 (.520) overall 3 years as HC. 7-2 vs AFC North in Home Games. 2-7 vs AFC North in Road Games.
